A Listing of Every Massachusetts Crime
The Master Crime List contains over 1,800 Massachusetts criminal offenses, each ranked and placed into one of nine levels of seriousness. Each of the Massachusetts felonies and misdemeanors is listed — first by MGL reference, and then alphabetically by offense — specifying the penalty type and sentencing information.
In general, certain circumstances mitigate (lessen) the punishment. Those include when the defendant was a minor participant in the criminal conduct, when the defendant was suffering from a mental or physical condition that significantly reduced his or her culpability for the offense, when the victim was an initiator, or provoker of the offense, or when there was a voluntary involvement in a substance abuse or other treatment program that began after the date of the offense.
In other circumstances, the punishment is enhanced based on aggravating factors such as the defendant used his or her position or status to facilitate commission of the offense, when the defendant was a leader in the commission of an offense involving two or more actors, or committed the offense while on probation, parole, or continues to repeat the same types of offenses against the same victim.
