Per §17 of Chapter 265 in the General Laws of Massachusetts, armed robbery involves larceny that is committed while the defendant was armed with a dangerous weapon.  It also involves larceny in which the defendant assaults and robs.  The penalties that are associated with this type of crime are serious and include the possibility of imprisonment for life.

If the defendant is accused of having his features distorted, for example through the use of a mask, they will face no less than five years for a first offense.  A second offense will have no less than ten years of imprisonment.  If the dangerous weapon was either a firearm, shotgun, rifle or machine gun, the minimum penalty will be for five years of imprisonment — fifteen years for a secondary offense.
